Student Athletes Excel at the 2025 World InterUniversities Championship
LAU’s 128-member delegation competes in nine sports at the elite championship in Barcelona, gaining podium finishes and a rich international experience.
Barcelona, Spain, welcomed LAU’s delegation from November 11 to 17 for the World InterUniversities Championship (WIUC) 2025, the largest university sports tournament in Europe, bringing together more than 5,000 student-athletes from 112 universities across 30 countries.
With a delegation of 128 student-athletes, accompanied by their coaches and administrators, LAUers competed in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, handball, swimming, tennis, athletics, padel, and men’s football.
The delegation was supported throughout the championship by the Offices of the Deans of Students and the Athletics Department. “Traveling with our athletes to Barcelona, I witnessed their determination, teamwork, and camaraderie in every match,” said Dr. Jad Abdallah, dean of students at the LAU Byblos campus. “It was a privilege to cheer them on across every court and see their hard work and commitment come to life.”
Dr. Raed Mohsen, dean of students at the LAU Beirut campus, expressed pride in “the fact that our varsity teams are competing internationally. It proves that the high standards upheld not only at LAU but also nationally, despite all the hardships that our country is experiencing, are contributing to determining global standards.”
The athletes faced an exceptionally strong field of competitors, with matches that were intense, fast-paced and demanding. Yet, they rose to every challenge, delivering performances defined by determination, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Their efforts translated into remarkable achievements. The men’s football team clinched first place after a series of commanding matches that demonstrated both precision and unity.
The men’s basketball team followed with a strong second-place finish, while the women’s basketball team secured third place after a series of competitive games. In padel, the men’s team earned a well-deserved third-place ranking. Meanwhile, the Swedish relay team delivered an exceptional performance, proudly bringing home a silver medal.
These accomplishments reflect not only technical skill but also months of preparation and the collective spirit that defines LAU athletics.
“We extend a profound salute to our student-athletes and their coaches for their remarkable achievements in Barcelona,” said Director of the Athletics Department Joe Moujaes. “Their ability to rapidly integrate and form a single, solid unit in the short period following the unification of our varsity across campuses is a testament to their professionalism, resilience, and commitment. This victory underscores the powerful synergy of our unified athletic program.”
Beyond the results, WIUC 2025 offered our athletes a rich opportunity for personal and cultural growth. They connected with peers from diverse backgrounds, exchanged experiences, and discovered new approaches to training and sports culture. Many returned home inspired and motivated to continue developing their athletic and leadership potential.
