LAU marked its fourth annual Research Day on April 30, 2026, at the Byblos campus, where undergraduates, graduates and faculty mentors convened for a vibrant intellectual exchange, modeled after international academic conferences.

Building on the momentum of the previous three years, the event underscored LAU’s growing commitment to research, particularly that of tangible, national impact, while spotlighting the intellectual endeavors and rigor of its academic community.

The Frem Civic Center became a hub for the sharing of novel ideas, as undergraduate students’ poster presentations stole the show, and graduate students passionately showcased their research findings to their faculty members, peers, and academicians from diverse disciplines.

Provost George E. Nasr emphasized the deeper purpose of research in today’s information-saturated world, noting that true distinction lies not merely in finding answers, but in asking meaningful questions. “Today, we have witnessed the depth of talent, curiosity, and dedication within our academic community,” he said during the opening of the awards ceremony.

“In a world where information is abundant and answers are increasingly accessible, what distinguishes true research is asking the right questions and pursuing them with rigor and purpose,” added Dr. Nasr, highlighting that  this becomes more crucial in Lebanon, “where complex challenges demand evidence-based solutions and thoughtful analysis.”

The growing culture of research at LAU reflects the institution’s broader strategic push toward producing impactful research. With significant annual funding now dedicated to internal faculty projects, LAU’s research has reached a new milestone: The President’s Intramural Research Fund (PIRF) has grown by 50 percent since its inception, with additional funds set aside for high-impact national research. These investments signal the university’s support of pressing societal needs, particularly in the absence of substantial extramural funding.

Dean of Graduate Studies and Research Samer Saab pointed to the rising enthusiasm among students as a key highlight of the event, especially following a semester marked by war in Lebanon.

“It is heartening to see more students motivated to participate in Research Day, because they are eager to showcase their work to peers and faculty outside their field,” he said.

Dr. Saab noted that this cross-disciplinary engagement has become a defining feature of the event, with plans underway to introduce an interdisciplinary category next year, judged by a diverse panel of faculty. He also commended faculty members for their vital role in mentoring students and volunteering as jury members, reinforcing a culture of collaboration and academic excellence.

Underscoring the event’s practical value for graduate students, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research Walid Marrouch noted that it coincides with thesis defenses and final project presentations.

“In many cases, the event becomes a platform for rehearsal,” he explained, allowing students to refine their work and gain feedback from a broader academic audience. He added that the structure of Research Day—modeled on international conference standards with a one-paper, one-presenter format followed by Q&A—helps prepare students for future academic and professional settings.

Research Day serves as a stage to announce and recognize excellence across the university’s research community, which has become a university tradition. These accolades, the Outstanding and Young Researcher Awards, honor sustained scholarly achievement based on the students’ publications and their quality. In addition, Research Day awards specifically recognize students’ performance, presentation skills, and the quality of their work during the event itself.

As LAU continues to invest in research capacity and foster interdisciplinary collaboration, Research Day stands out as a cornerstone event that reaffirms the university’s role in generating knowledge that matters.
