LAU Athletes Return Victorious from Athens and Belgrade

Sailors and Captains win six titles and bring pride to their alma mater.

Competing in the 2024 International Sports Festival hosted by the American College of Greece-Deree College, LAU varsity teams secured four titles in total, including two gold and two bronze positions, while the swimming team won six medals.

The event featured the participation of 11 higher-education institutions from Greece, Italy, Lebanon, UAE and Kuwait, and was held in Athens from April 10 to 12. The LAU student athletes faced off in basketball, football, women’s volleyball, tennis and swimming.

The Beirut campus Women’s Basketball team won the title. The Byblos campus Women’s Football team also won first place.

The Swimming team collectively won six medals and came in second position in men’s and women’s swimming overall.

At the 16th edition of the Belgrade International Student Sport Tournament held in Belgrade, Serbia from April 18 till 21, the Byblos campus varsity teams competed against their counterparts from Lebanon, Italy and the UAE, and brought pride to LAU.

The Women’s Basketball team triumphed over their counterparts from the Université Saint-Esprit de Kaslik and won gold.

The Men’s Futsal won silver after facing off in the final with one of the Serbian teams.

“It was invigorating to see our student athletes from both campuses cheer each other on until the very last breath,” said Lead Athletics Coordinator Mohamad Mawas, adding that theirs was the ultimate win for LAU and Lebanon.
