A New Form of Mental Health Support: The Vent Box

LAU Counseling Services offers a flexible, anonymous and text-based outlet that accommodates students’ varying circumstances privately and without pressure.

In response to growing student needs for accessible and flexible mental health support, LAU Counseling Services launched a new form of support, the “Vent Box.” Designed as an asynchronous, submit-only web chat, the platform offers students a simple, anonymous space to express their thoughts and emotions anytime and with heightened privacy.

The concept is intentionally low-barrier. Integrated directly into the Counseling Services webpage, the Vent Box allows students to type and submit what they are feeling in the moment, without needing to log in or reveal their identity. This approach recognizes that not all students are ready or able to engage in real-time counseling sessions. For some, especially those living in shared spaces or navigating overwhelming emotions, the privacy and discretion of writing can feel safer and more manageable than speaking.

Importantly, the Vent Box is not a live chat, and expectations are clearly set from the outset. Rather than responding to individual submissions, LAU counselors will compile recurring themes and concerns into a weekly “Reflection Reel” that will highlight shared experiences within the student community while offering practical coping strategies and supportive tips. By so doing, the initiative not only protects anonymity but also reminds students that they are not alone in their struggles. Students who wish to seek personalized support may choose to share their contact details.

The Vent Box builds on LAU’s broader commitment to accessible mental healthcare. Counseling Services has already expanded its offerings through online formats, ensuring students can continue to receive professional support regardless of location or circumstance. This continuity is particularly vital during periods of crisis, such as times of war, when students may experience heightened stress, anxiety, uncertainty, and trauma, often in deeply personal and varied ways.

By providing both structured counseling and flexible, student-driven tools like the Vent Box, LAU Counseling Services is addressing mental health from multiple angles. Ultimately, it creates a space where expression is always possible—even when words feel hard to say out loud—and where shared reflection can become a meaningful source of comfort and connection.
